Learn how to use games and rewards to drive performance and build stronger teams. Boost employee engagement with gamification.
Gamification in the workplace is a growing trend that uses games to encourage employees to perform their very best. By participating in various digital games and competitions, employees earn points and rewards as they learn new skills or help the company to achieve critical milestones. Best of all, a study revealed that gamification could increase employee engagement by as much as 60%.
Let’s take a look at how gamification in the workplace can positively impact engagement.
Happy employees are engaged employees, and gamification has been shown to make them happier at work. Why? Gamification increases levels of satisfaction and achievement. There are some tasks employees simply don’t enjoy as much. Gamification rewards employees to strive beyond just completing the task. By earning points or rewards, employees feel more connected to more critical company goals. Those annoying tasks that would usually feel insignificant can be more meaningful when paired with gamification.
One of the most common ways gamification is used today is in eLearning. In fact, training software is the No. 1 place employees would like to see gamification used. Employees who receive gamified training are more motivated and engaged than those who do not. Additionally, employees who do not receive gamified training are more likely to feel bored and unproductive. From competitions to quizzes, the possibilities to incorporate gamification into your training efforts are endless.
The combined higher rates of happiness and motivation when using gamification naturally increase productivity as well. Gamification is a source of fun and stimulation — a way to promote healthy competition for employees to perform at their best. Companies like Domino’s, Zappos, and Google have all implemented gamification to encourage new ideas, improve customer service, and enhance recruiting efforts.
There are several ways gamification can play a role in team building. Teams may have a little friendly competition to see who can reach a goal first, or different team members may all be assigned various tasks that help them earn badges to achieve a larger common goal. Gamification can also include more informal team building activities like scavenger hunts. All of these activities are great ways to keep remote teams connected. In return, gamified tasks enable leaders to discover what teams work well together.
There are numerous ways to tie gamification into employee recognition. For example, Assembly offers employee rewards and badges that can be customized and connected to your company’s core values. When asked, employees prefer rewards, badges, points, leaderboards, and levels, in that order. You can even create a little healthy competition to see what teams are using the recognition platform the most. Simply tie team usage to metrics to see what kind of impact recognition has on your teams. It would provide a valuable data point for leaders to see.
As companies adapt to younger generations and the increased demand for more flexible work environments, gamification will continue to provide new opportunities to drive employee engagement and connection.
Gamification in the workplace involves incorporating game-like elements, such as points, rewards, leaderboards, and badges, into non-game environments like employee tasks and training. The aim is to boost employee motivation, engagement, and productivity by making work more interactive and rewarding. Gamified systems often encourage employees to develop new skills and work toward company goals in a fun and engaging way.
Gamification improves employee engagement by making everyday tasks more exciting and rewarding. It taps into employees' desire for achievement and recognition by offering incentives such as points, rewards, and badges. By making work more fun and providing clear, attainable goals, gamification encourages employees to stay motivated, involved, and aligned with the company's objectives. Studies show that gamification can increase engagement by up to 60%.
Gamification is widely used in employee training, particularly in eLearning platforms. For example, companies may integrate quizzes, simulations, and competitions where employees can earn points or badges for completing tasks or achieving learning milestones. Leaderboards can also encourage friendly competition among employees. This interactive approach makes learning more enjoyable and improves knowledge retention, leading to better performance.
Gamification fosters teamwork by encouraging collaboration and healthy competition among employees. Teams can participate in gamified activities like competitions or challenges, where they work together to achieve common goals. For example, teams can be rewarded with badges for completing different tasks that contribute to a larger company objective. This approach strengthens team cohesion, improves communication, and keeps remote teams connected through fun, goal-oriented activities.

Great question! You can customize your core values to match your organization's to boost and track alignment. You can change your currency from the 🏆 emoji (our default) to any emoji of your choice. You can swap our logo for your own. You can also set up company culture rewards such as, "Lunch with the CEO," "Buy a book on us," and so much more!
While we recommend a peer to peer set up where anyone in your organization can give or receive recognition, you can set up Assembly however you want. If you need to limit the people who can give or receive recognition, that's perfectly fine and can be done from your Admin, here.
Assembly connects to the tools your employees use every day to offer an easy, seamless experience with minimal change management.

That depends on the company's permissions set up. That said, over 90% of the employees on Assembly's platform are recognized on a monthly basis. That means nearly every employee across all of our customers are receiving regular recognition from their peers, managers, or leadership. We're extremely proud of this.
They are not required. You can use Assembly without having rewards set up. However, we don't recommend it if you intend to have a high adoption and usage rate. You can always keep the costs down by offering internal culture rewards that are fulfilled by you internally.
No, you can remove allowances from anyone or everyone. It's up to you but we do recommend using points whether they're worth a real dollar value or not. Companies that use points have a much higher engagement rate even if those points don't exchange for real dollars.
