Holiday parties bring employees together, allowing them to unwind, connect, and celebrate shared achievements in a festive atmosphere. Beyond the fun, these events boost morale, strengthen workplace bonds, and foster a sense of camaraderie. Holiday parties also provide an opportunity to recognize and appreciate employees for their hard work throughout the year, making them feel valued.

Holiday Themes and Creative Ideas

A memorable holiday party starts with a fun theme. Here are unique ideas to inspire your office celebration:

  1. Holiday Scavenger Hunt: Organize a holiday-themed scavenger hunt around the office or online for remote teams. Create clues and tasks related to seasonal items or company fun facts. This encourages teamwork and gets everyone moving or collaborating virtually.
  2. Ugly Sweater Party: Ask employees to wear their wildest, tackiest holiday sweaters. Host a contest with categories like “Most Festive” and “Most Outrageous.” This theme is low-cost, easy to organize, and guarantees plenty of laughs.
  3. Secret Santa or White Elephant: These classic holiday gift exchanges bring everyone together for some light-hearted fun. For Secret Santa, encourage participants to make their gifts personal by setting a small budget and adding a twist, like themed or handmade items. For White Elephant, set a budget and allow everyone to bring quirky, unique, or funny gifts that get passed around and “stolen” in a playful way. This twist can lead to laughter and lighthearted competition, making it a memorable part of your holiday festivities.
  4. Desk Decorating Contest - Deck the Cubicles: Invite employees to decorate their workspaces for the holidays. Have judges or the entire team vote on the best decor. This activity is festive, encourages creativity, and adds holiday cheer to the office.
  5. Gingerbread House Decorating: Set up a gingerbread decorating station with icing, candy, and sprinkles. Divide employees into small teams to create their own “gingerbread offices,” and let everyone vote for the best design.
  6. Holiday Potluck: A potluck is a fantastic way to include everyone’s favorite holiday foods and traditions. Encourage employees to bring dishes from their cultural backgrounds to celebrate the diversity within your team.
  7. Virtual Holiday Hijinks: For remote teams, plan a virtual holiday party with online games, breakout room activities, and a holiday playlist. A virtual photo booth or background contest can add a creative touch.
  8. Holiday Board Games: Set up a game station with holiday-themed board games or card games. Choose games that are easy to play in groups and spark a sense of competition and laughter.
  9. Cookie Decorating: Supply cookies, icing, and sprinkles, and let employees get creative. This interactive activity is simple to organize and leaves everyone with delicious treats to take home.
  10. Holiday Bingo: Create a customized holiday Bingo game with squares that represent office inside jokes or seasonal references. This activity is easy to play in-person or virtually.
  11. Ornament Decorating: Provide blank ornaments and craft supplies so employees can make their own holiday decorations. This allows employees to tap into their creativity and leaves them with a souvenir from the event.
  12. Caroling Karaoke Contest: Set up a karaoke machine and let employees choose holiday classics or popular songs to sing. This is a fantastic way to get everyone laughing and in the holiday spirit.
  13. DIY Escape Room Holiday Party: Create a holiday-themed escape room with puzzles and challenges. You can set it up in a meeting room or organize a virtual escape room event for remote teams.
  14. Holiday Pictionary: Divide employees into teams and have them guess holiday-related words and phrases. It’s easy to set up and guarantees laughs.
  15. Holiday Trivia: Test employees' holiday knowledge with a trivia game. Include questions about different holidays and traditions for a culturally diverse twist.

Interactive Activities and Games

Adding interactive activities makes a holiday party engaging. Here are fun ideas that cater to both in-person and virtual gatherings:

  • Holiday-themed Ice Breakers: Start the event with a few icebreaker questions that relate to holiday traditions or favorite holiday memories.
  • Virtual-friendly Games: For hybrid or remote teams, plan virtual game sessions with options like online Pictionary, holiday Bingo, or holiday charades.
  • Photo Booths: Create a holiday photo booth with props and a festive backdrop for fun group photos. Virtual photo booths work well for remote teams, too.

Inclusive and Culturally Sensitive Planning

To make sure everyone feels included, consider a theme like “Season of Celebration” or “Winter Wonderland.” This broader theme can cover various traditions and allow for an inclusive workplace event. Here are additional tips:

  • Diverse Decor and Cuisine: Represent different cultures and holidays through decor and menu options, which can be a great way to showcase the diversity of your team.
  • Alternative Gift Giving: Consider organizing a “gift of giving” initiative where employees can donate to a charity or bring gifts for a toy drive or food bank.

Employee Recognition and Appreciation

Take time during the holiday party to recognize employees’ hard work and achievements. Here are ways to incorporate employee recognition into the celebration:

  • Awards and Superlatives: Present fun superlative awards, such as “Best Team Spirit” or “Most Creative Problem Solver.”
  • Thank-you Speech: The CEO, HR, or manager can deliver a heartfelt thank-you speech to express gratitude for the team’s efforts.
  • Holiday Gifts: Consider giving each employee a small, thoughtful gift, such as a customized item or a gift card.

Logistics and Planning Tips

For a smooth and successful event, keep these planning tips in mind:

  • Budgeting: Set a realistic budget that includes decorations, catering, venue, and activities. Explore cost-effective options, like DIY decor or potluck contributions.
  • Venue and Timing: Choose a convenient venue that can accommodate your team size, whether it’s a dedicated space in the office or a virtual platform for remote teams.
  • Communication: Build excitement by sending out invitations with details about the event and encouraging participation.

Feedback and Follow-up

After the party, gather feedback to learn what employees enjoyed and areas for improvement. Send a follow-up “thank you” message to maintain the positive energy and appreciation.

At the time of redemption (when your employees exchange their points for a paid reward) you'll pay face value. If a reward is a $10 Amazon gift card, your cost will be $10. All paid rewards are billed for on a monthly basis.

The good news is that you don't have to pay for rewards upfront because we only charge you when points are redeemed, not when they're earned.

Great question! You can customize your core values to match your organization's to boost and track alignment. You can change your currency from the 🏆 emoji (our default) to any emoji of your choice. You can swap our logo for your own. You can also set up company culture rewards such as, "Lunch with the CEO," "Buy a book on us," and so much more!

Who can give or receive recognition?

While we recommend a peer to peer set up where anyone in your organization can give or receive recognition, you can set up Assembly however you want. If you need to limit the people who can give or receive recognition, that's perfectly fine and can be done from your Admin, here.

What integrations are available?

Assembly connects to the tools your employees use every day to offer an easy, seamless experience with minimal change management.

Assembly has integrations with HCM/HRIS systems like ADP, Google, Office 365, and Slack. We also integrate with communication tools like Slack and Teams so you and your employees can access Assembly wherever they work now.

What's your average adoption rate?

That depends on the company's permissions set up. That said, over 90% of the employees on Assembly's platform are recognized on a monthly basis. That means nearly every employee across all of our customers are receiving regular recognition from their peers, managers, or leadership. We're extremely proud of this.

Must rewards be set up to use Assembly?

They are not required. You can use Assembly without having rewards set up. However, we don't recommend it if you intend to have a high adoption and usage rate. You can always keep the costs down by offering internal culture rewards that are fulfilled by you internally.

Are points required to use Assembly?

No, you can remove allowances from anyone or everyone. It's up to you but we do recommend using points whether they're worth a real dollar value or not. Companies that use points have a much higher engagement rate even if those points don't exchange for real dollars.
